Andy Murray wins Surbiton Trophy, first grass-court singles championship in 7 years

The three-time Grand Slam winner lauded his “perfect start to the grass season” as he started his preparations for Wimbledon. In the Lexus Surbiton Trophy final on Sunday, 36-year-old Murray defeated Austrian Jurij Rodionov 6-3, 6-2 to become the oldest grass-court winner on the ATP Challenger Tour and secure a seeded spot at Wimbledon next month.

Since winning Wimbledon in 2016, it was his first singles victory on grass. In order to focus on Wimbledon, where he had won two of his majors on grass, Murray withdrew from the French Open.

In just over an hour, Murray dismantled Rodionov with a powerful shot collection. The second set was delayed by heavy rain, but Murray eventually won it with more hard serves. The delay of more than three hours due to the rain prevented Murray’s kids from witnessing his victory.

“They didn’t tell me they were coming, then obviously I won the first set and my wife decided to bring (the kids) in case I won,” Andy Murray said.

He also added, “They arrived as the rain came and then left as they took the covers off. She messaged me saying, ‘Well done, we have just got home, I can’t believe we didn’t stay.’”
