Angelina Jolie shares her perspective on Hollywood’s challenges

Angelina Jolie recently opened up about the challenges of Hollywood and the importance of living a balanced life in the entertainment industry. During a conversation with Variety at the 36th Palm Springs International Film Festival on January 3, she shared her advice for young artists: “If you love theater, you can do readings at home in your pajamas. You don’t have to get that job. Find ways to just live as an artist, be around artists, but also live a very full life.” Jolie emphasized the need for aspiring actors to balance their passion with a fulfilling personal life, pointing out that Hollywood can be a tough and sometimes unhealthy environment. “It’s not the easiest place, and it’s not where you should give everything if you’re living a full life,” she added.

Jolie was honored with the festival’s Desert Palm Achievement Award, a recognition of her exceptional career and contributions to film. During her chat, she also reflected on her role in Maria, where she played the legendary opera singer Maria Callas. She explained how her initial hesitation to sing on screen stemmed from an experience where someone once told her she couldn’t sing, which discouraged her. However, when director Pablo Larraín approached her for the role, she decided to take on the challenge. Despite the pressure, Jolie assured him she would do her best to portray Callas authentically, even if no one could truly sing like the iconic opera singer.

Jolie’s performance in Maria has been widely praised, earning her recognition and nominations at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards and the upcoming Critics Choice Awards.
