Anne Hathaway pens a heartfelt note for late Alan Arkin

Following the news of Alan Arkin’s death, prominent Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway turned to Instagram to pay tribute to the late actor.In honour of their time together, Hathaway, who co-starred with Arkin in the 2008 action espionage comedy Get Smart, wrote a touching tribute.

Hathaway characterised Arkin as a “gem of a person” in an Instagram post and expressed thanks for the opportunity to work with him. “Alan Arkin was a gem of a person, and I am so lucky to have gotten to work with him on Get Smart,” she said, adding that “he was kind, soulful, supportive, a pro’s pro, generous, genuine, wise, inquisitive, and a fantastic example of how to be an artist.”

The actress also reflected on Arkin’s deep influence on her during their partnership, saying, “He left a huge impression on my then twenty-three-year-old self and is at the centre of some of my most cherished and fond career memories.” I’m extending love and condolences to his family (who are also jewels). Along with her touching message, Hathaway included a headshot of Arkin, a snapshot of the two of them at a red carpet event, and an image from their film Get Smart.

Arkin’s sons, Adam, Matthew, and Anthony, addressed on behalf of the family in an exclusive interview, honouring their father’s memory. “Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man. A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.”

Arkin, who was born on March 26, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York, had a spectacular career spanning film, stage, and television. He made his Broadway debut in 1961 and won a Tony Award for his performance in Enter Laughing in 1963. The veteran actor’s work was recognised with numerous award nominations, including six Emmy Awards. His most recent nomination was for his performance in The Kominsky Method.

Despite departing the show before its third season in 2021, Arkin reminisced on his love of acting, saying that while he missed certain aspects of the business, he had reached a point in his life where he no longer need it.
