Antoine Griezmann breaks Atletico Madrid all-time goal record with 174 goals

In the Spanish Super Cup semifinal on Wednesday, Antoine Griezmann surpassed Luis Aragonés to become Atletico Madrid’s all-time leading scorer with 174 goals. The goal came against Real Madrid.

In the 37th minute, Griezmann tied the game at 2-2 with a right-footed strike from outside the box to score the milestone goal.

Griezmann needed 368 matches with the team to hit his milestone, while Aragonés needed 370 games.

Ever after matching Aragonés with two goals against Getafe in the Spanish league in December, Griezmann has not scored in three straight games.

With Atletico, the France international is in his eighth season. His first stay with the club went from 2014 to 2019, after which he joined Barcelona for two mostly poor seasons. He returned to Atletico in 2021 on a one-year loan, which was extended into the 2022-23 season.

Atletico then secured a deal with Barcelona to sign Griezmann, allowing him to play more minutes for Diego Simeone’s squad.

The clubs were involved in a contractual disagreement that was restricting the 32-year-old forward’s opportunities, with Atletico allegedly having to pay Barcelona 40 million euros ($43.8 million) if his playing time exceeded a certain number of minutes.

Griezmann, who previously played for Real Sociedad, has signed a deal with Atletico until June 2026.
