Anupam Kher says he’s never invited to actor roundtables; criticises ‘Mediocre’ actors being celebrated

Veteran actor Anupam Kher, known for voicing his opinions without hesitation, has sparked conversation again with his recent remarks about the film industry’s popular year-end roundtable discussions. During an appearance on Unfiltered with Samdish, Kher revealed that despite spending over 41 years in cinema, he has never been invited to these conversations.

While speaking about whether he feels underappreciated, Kher said that recognition depends entirely on whose validation one seeks. He explained that a certain section of the industry tries to decide which actors deserve attention, adding that this behaviour often stems from “mediocrity.” According to him, some individuals in the media attempt to shape career paths and determine who should be celebrated.

Kher even recalled calling a senior editor to question why “mediocre actors” are repeatedly praised on such platforms. Confident in his craft, he stated, “Acting-wise, main inn sabka baap hoon. I run an actual acting school.”

However, the actor also admitted that he has made peace with the fact that not everyone wishes to see him succeed. Over the years, he has learned to detach from external opinions. He shared that true confidence comes when one stops trying to be liked by everyone. “The day you understand that, you become the king,” he said, referring to his play where he openly showcased his failures.

Kher concluded that embracing vulnerability and ignoring unnecessary validation have made him stronger both personally and professionally.
