Apple becomes world’s biggest smartphone seller in Q4 as Huawei sales tumbled

Apple’s smartphone shipments jumped 22 percent in the fourth quarter, making it the world’s biggest seller. This happened after the Huawei’s sales tumbled by 42.4 percent in the quarter as the company was hit by US sanctions.

Data from research firm IDC showed shipment of 90.1 million Apple phones, giving it global market share of 23.4 percent, with revenue crossing $100 billion for the first time.

Its iPhone 12 series, released last October, marked its first 5G-enabled devices. The new models tapped pent up demand, especially in China. Sales in Greater China, which includes Hong Kong and Taiwan, surged 57% over the quarter.

Huawei is now in early-stage talks to sell its premium smartphone brands P and Mate, exiting from the high-end smartphone making business.
