AR Rahman has spoken about the recent controversy surrounding his remarks on communalism and Bollywood, indicating that he is ready to put the episode behind him. The composer addressed the issue while promoting his upcoming Wonderment Tour in Chennai, choosing reflection over confrontation as he responded to questions about the backlash he faced in recent weeks.
In a conversation with Noise and Grains, the organisers of the Chennai leg of his tour, Rahman was asked about the public statement he had issued to clarify his position. Responding cautiously, he said that life requires constant preparation and hinted that not every explanation reaches those it is meant for. With a smile, he steered the conversation away from the controversy, suggesting that the matter was already understood.
Singer-comedian Alexander Babu, who was part of the interaction, shared that he felt disappointed seeing Rahman explain his love for the country in his statement. Rahman replied that explanations are often unnecessary for those who truly know a person, adding that those who doubt rarely listen even when clarity is offered.
The composer had earlier spoken to BBC Asian Network about whether he experienced prejudice as a Tamil musician in Bollywood. Rahman said he never felt it directly, though he acknowledged that recent changes in power dynamics and growing divisiveness could influence perceptions. His remarks, including criticism of Chhaava for capitalising on division, sparked debate online.
Following the backlash, Rahman released a video message reiterating that music has always been his way of honouring India and its culture, stressing that his intention has never been to hurt sentiments but to unite through art.
