Argentine World Cup Winner Angel Di Maria joins Benfica as a free agent for second stint

Angel Di Maria returned to Benfica after leaving Juventus on a free transfer. The Argentine has returned to the Portuguese club he joined when he first came to Europe from Rosario in 2007.

It has now been announced that Di Maria has signed a one-year contract extension with Benfica, keeping him with the club until 2024.

The current Primeira Liga winners will rely on Di Maria to provide veteran wing experience and assist them to retain their title in the next season. He’ll also be reunited with Argentina teammates like Nicolas Otamendi from last year’s World Cup-winning campaign.

The club announced the signing of the 35-year-old on Twitter with a post that read,” Welcome Home, Di Maria!”.

The Argentine’s time at the club from 2007 to 2010 served as a preparation for his major transfer to Real Madrid, where he won a league title, two domestic cups and the Champions League.

After seven years at PSG, Di Maria signed a one-year contract with Juventus last season. And once he chose to leave after a poor season, speculations were rife regarding his next destination.

In the summer, the Argentine winger was reportedly approached by Inter Miami, who suggested the idea of reuniting him with Argentina teammate Lionel Messi. However, doing so would have required the 35-year-old to leave European football entirely. Di Maria appears to have declined the offer.
