Ashok Leyland Revives Heavy-Duty Icons with 360 HP TAURUS and HIPPO Trucks

Ashok Leyland has revived two of its most recognisable heavy-duty truck brands — TAURUS and HIPPO — reintroducing them with next-generation technology aimed at improving productivity, uptime, and profitability for fleet operators.

Powered by an 8.0-litre A-Series 6-cylinder engine producing 360 HP and best-in-class torque of 1,600 Nm, the new TAURUS and HIPPO trucks are engineered for demanding applications in mining, infrastructure, and construction.

TAURUS, India’s first multi-axle truck, continues its legacy as a benchmark tipper for high-load operations, while HIPPO — a dominant heavy hauler from the 1980s to early 2000s — returns as a tractor designed for bulk commodities, industrial raw materials, and over-dimensional cargo transportation.

Sanjeev Kumar, President – MHCV, Ashok Leyland, said the brands hold emotional and operational significance for Indian transporters. “HIPPO and TAURUS aren’t just product names; they are legends that earned the trust of generations of Indian transporters. These names became synonymous with heavy-duty performance across Indian highways and mining sites, and that’s the legacy we’re building upon,” he said.
