Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings sustains ‘significant knee injury’ during defeat by Newcastle

Tyrone Mings, an England player and the centre back for Aston Villa, is expected to be sidelined and have surgery after suffering an awful injury during Villa’s opening game against Newcastle United.

After colliding with the Swedish striker, Alexander Isak, the English defender had to be stretchered off during the first half of Villa’s 5-1 defeat against Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Villa stated that the 30-year-old center-back will require “lengthy rehabilitation.”

Mings’ injury comes only days after Emiliano Buendia suffered a knee ligament injury that might keep him out for up to 8 months.

“Aston Villa can confirm that Tyrone Mings has sustained a significant knee injury,” a club statement said on Monday. “The England international was stretchered off from the field after damaging his knee during the first half of Villa’s match at Newcastle United on Saturday.” The statement added,  “The defender has undergone scans and will, unfortunately, require surgery ahead of a lengthy rehabilitation process.”

Mings, who joined Villa from Bournemouth in 2018, has missed just 12 Premier League matches since his arrival in 2019.
