AstraZeneca applies for special approval in Japan

AstraZeneca PLC issued a statement on Friday stating that the pharmaceutical company has applied for approval in Japan for its COVID-19 vaccination becoming the second company to do so. Earlier, it was Pfizer who did the same.

The Japanese government has previously signed a contract with AstraZeneca to procure 120 million doses of their vaccine to vaccinate it’s population of 60 million people, who’s cost will be borne entirely by the government.

AstraZeneca has applied for a special approval and says it will be submitting additional data of the vaccination with the drug authorities in March. The COVID-19 vaccine doses will be made mostly in Japan and doesn’t require ultra-cold refrigeration like Pfizer vaccine.

This comes as at a critical point as Japan is getting ready to host summer Olympics 2021 which were supposed happen last year but got postponed due to the global pandemic.
