Australia approves Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 shots to be used by late February

Vaccination with the Pfizer is likely to begin by late February at 80,000 doses per week. Australia has set a target of 4 million Pfizer vaccine doses by April, Health Minister Greg Hunt told reporters.

The vaccine had been provisionally approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration’s (TGA) for Australians aged 16 years and over, Prime Minister Scott Morrison told the reporters, noting it was a year since the first Coronavirus case was detected in the country.

He also cautioned that there are limitations to what the vaccines can do and that the vaccination would not mean border restriction would be lifted.

However, with the approval of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for use, Australia also warned AstraZeneca’s international problems mean the country would need to distribute a locally manufactured shot earlier than planned.
