Australia’s major media companies strike $47 million deal with Google

Winning an extended licensing fight with Google, many media companies announced content deals with the tech giant, that were supposedly more remunerative than their worldwide contenders.

Australia’s two major free-to-air television broadcasters have finalized arrangements valued at A$60 million ($47 million) a year, according to media reports.

This dominates the $76 million agreement between Google and the Alliance de la Presse d’information generale (APIG), a lobby group representing most major French publishers. The deal decodes that Google will split the amount among 121 publishers in France over a period of 3 years, which comes down to $209,000 a year per publisher.

The deal was just in time with the new Australian laws that would permit the government to choose an arbitrator to set Google’s content fees if it can’t strike an arrangement privately.
