Avatar: Fire and Ash box office: James Cameron’s threequel grosses ₹165 crore in India in 10 days

During its second weekend in India, Avatar: Fire and Ash grossed approximately Rs. 34.75 crore (Rs. 28.50 crore nett) or USD 3.85 million. That brings its overall gross to Rs. 164.50 crore (Rs. 135 crore nett) or around USD 18.25 million. The film is already among the top Hollywood grossers in the country, now ranking seventh.

It will climb up one spot to sixth place by passing The Lion King, but that is likely to remain the ceiling, as The Jungle Book at fifth appears out of reach. Fire and Ash still has another week of vacation, during which it will continue to accumulate well. It will undoubtedly exceed the Rs. 200 crore gross barrier, however Rs. 250 crore appears to be impossible. Avatar: The Way of Water remains India’s highest-earning Hollywood picture, grossing Rs. 465 crore.

The picture experienced a 55% dip from its debut weekend, which is consistent with the trajectory of its predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water. So far, the trend has been OK; the issue is that it began at a substantially lower level. After ten days of release, the film is trailing Avatar 2 by 45 percent, which is one of the most significant drop-offs among the film’s key global markets.

The film succeeded well in Tamil Nadu, as has been the case with recent Hollywood Christmas releases, such as Mufasa last year, Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021, and The Way of Water in 2022. Kerala is experiencing the biggest decrease compared to Avatar 2, with the threequel expected to finish almost 70% lower. While some may blame Dhurandhar rivalry for its underperformance, the reality is that Hindi circuits have held up better than South when compared to Avatar 2, therefore that is not the case.
