At the Indian box office on Friday, Avatar: Fire and Ash made Rs. 22 crore (Rs. 18 crore nett) or USD 2.50 million. Depending on whether the actuals come over or under Thor: Love and Thunder, that is the seventh or eighth largest opening day for Hollywood in India. Even while the movie’s statistics are good, they are much lower than those of its predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water, which made Rs. 48.50 crore on its opening day in India.
With Fire and Ash opening at significantly less than half of The Way of Water, the magnitude of the loss is startling. A reduction after Avatar 2 was always inevitable, and the tendency is evident worldwide as well. Thirteen years after the first film, Avatar 2 was the eagerly awaited follow-up to the biggest movie ever made. This time, there isn’t the pent-up need for an Avatar movie like there was for The Way of Water. There is perhaps less expectation for the third movie because the sequel was not as well-received as the first.
In the future, there is a significant holiday season that the movie can take use of. There is certainly space for improvement because the opening is so much worse than Avatar 2. Even though it falls short of the franchise’s expectations, the movie should register a big final total. At the time of their release, the first two Avatar films were the biggest box office successes for Hollywood in India; Avatar 3 will fall far short of that.
