A year after the launch of Bajaj’s first all-electric scooter, Chetak, is now ready to open for bookings in 24 more cities in FY22. The bookings and deliveries were initially restricted to Bengaluru and Pune.
However, they couldn’t open up in more cities due to issues with supply of battery used in power of Chetak. These cells were to be procured by Bajaj Auto’s India vendor from Wuhan, origin of the COVID-19 pandemic in China.
Production was hit again in December perhaps due to global shortage of semiconductors, a vital component required for the software programmes controlling an electric vehicle. However, there have been 50,000 registrations right now, which is basically an expression of interest from buyers who are waiting for the bookings to reopen as mentioned by Mr. Rakesh Sharma, Executive Director at Bajaj Auto.
