Bangladesh elections: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulates Sheikh Hasina for winning historic fourth straight term

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina on her 4th straight victory in the parliamentary election.

Talking to his X account, PM Modi penned, “Spoke to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and congratulated her on her victory for a historic fourth consecutive term in the Parliamentary elections. I also congratulate the people of Bangladesh for the successful conduct of elections. We are committed to further strengthen our enduring and people-centric partnership with Bangladesh.”

Hasina became prime minister for the first time in 1996. This will be her fifth overall.

Hasina’s Awami League won roughly 75% of the seats in Sunday’s general election, which was boycotted by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and had poor voter turnout.

Hasina won the Gopalganj-3 constituency by a wide margin for her eighth term as a Member of Parliament, while her party, the Awami League, gained 223 seats to set up the government in the elections held on Sunday.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami and other like-minded parties launched a nationwide strike, claiming that the elections were neither free nor fair.
