Barbie: BBC gives hilarious response to the film’s depression commercial scene

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is full of amazing references certainly aimed at millennials and the BBC is joining in on the fun by replying to one of the movie’s funniest bits.

There’s a huge reference to the BBC  adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice” starring Jennifer Ehle as Lizzie Bennet and Colin Firth as Mr Darcy at the climax of “Barbie,” and the studio across the pond felt fit to reply. In an Instagram post styled just like the “Barbie” film and captioned he swam so Ken could Beach,” a reference to Ken’s (Ryan Gosling) career in “beach,” the BBC’s streamer iPlayer played disco music over Firth’s Darcy riding a horse, with on-screen text reading,  “Before there was Beach Ken, there was Lake Ken.” The video then moves to Darcy hurling himself into the water in his white shirt, leading to one of the film’s most iconic scenes, specifically, Darcy in a wet, white shirt.

“You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you,” Firth’s Darcy says over the clip. Overall, it has a lot of “Kenergy.”

How does Colin Firth factor fit into Barbie?

In the film, we see fake commercial advertising for “Depression Barbie,” who spends hours scrolling her former best friend’s Instagram, eats Starbursts till her jaw hurts, only wears sweatpants and watches BBC “Pride and Prejudice” on a loop. As an added bonus, “Barbie” features a brief video of Darcy and Elizabeth from the film, culminating in a pitch-perfect reference for millennials. But keep in mind that anxiety, OCD and panic episodes are sold separately.
