It is understood that Barcelona are interested in bringing Juventus central defender Matthijs de Ligt to Camp Nou this summer.
The Dutch defender was believed to have been close to joining the Catalan club prior to joining the Old Lady in 2019, but has earned his place amongst Juve’s first-team.
De Ligt helped the club to to win two trophies thus far in the league title in 2020, before lifting the Supercoppa Italiana earlier this season.
A move to Barcelona would mean reuniting with Koeman, who coached De Ligt as manager of the Netherlands from 2018 to 2020. The Juve player would also be reunited with Frenkie de Jong, with whom he played in Ajax’s Champions League semi-final in 2019.
The main problem is cost. Barcelona are already trying to chase one of Europe’s most expensive transfer targets in Erling Haaland, and have spent so much in the past few years.
The Catalans already have Ronald Arajo, Oscar Mingueza, Clément Lenglet, Gerard Piqué, and Samuel Umtiti in defence, though some of them (particularly Umtiti) could leave, and if Barcelona continues to use a three-man line, they will require reinforcement.
