Barcelona president Joan Laporta says European Super League could start next season

Joan Laporta, the president of FC Barcelona, stated on Friday that he does not care if English teams participate or not, and that a European Super League project might start as soon as next season.

However, some clubs that Laporta said may join the league eventually showed disinterest in the potential new competition. Spanish titans Barcelona and Real Madrid announced a Super League project in 2021, but it immediately failed due to fan and institutional outrage, with the other clubs withdrawing.

The European Union’s Court of Justice ruled in December that FIFA and UEFA, the world and European football governing bodies, had violated competition law by locking the breakaway league.

Super League promoters A22 Sports Management quickly announced plans for a new 64-team league to compete with or replace the UEFA Champions League.

“The Super League could start next season, or it will be in 2025-26, and if not, I will rethink everything,” Laporta told RAC1 radio station.

He added, “I don’t care if the English teams join. They already have their Super League — the Premier League.”

Laporta stated that the project might start with just 16 teams. He also added, “The Super League means that you’re putting 100 million euros ($109 million) on the table for a club just for competing in the competition, at least, and you don’t even get that for winning the Champions League.”
