However, outside of Japan, the term has evolved to be linked specifically with animation created by or produced in Japan. We’ve chosen to use Netflix’s own anime category for this particular list and only include films that are listed there, regardless of their country of origin. The anime A Whisker Away, which tells a love-and-cats story, is a pure cinematic feast from start to finish that will have you grinning ear to ear and purring with happiness. Wanting to Cry, I Pretend to Be a Cat is the poetic translation of the original Japanese title, which captures the whimsical tone of this fantastical journey and may make you wish you, too, could join the feline race. It revolves on young Miyo Sasaki, who attempts to get the attention of a classmate by assuming the form of a cat. But ultimately, this is less about inexperienced love and more about her own investigation of how she wants to live her life.
Seven Deadly Sins: Cursed by Light
Seven Deadly Sins: Cursed By Light, a follow-up to The Seven Deadly Sins the Movie: Prisoners of the Sky, follows up six months after the Seven Deadly Sins have broken up after defeating the Demon King and Cath Palug and losing their cherished buddy Escanor. In this movie, Meliodas and his friends are forced to act once more when a potent new magical coalition threatens to upend the recently established peace and put everyone in great danger.
Ninokuni
NiNoKuni is a fantasy movie based on the same-named video game series about three teens who are drawn into the mystical Evermore kingdom. They learn how decisions made in one realm affect decisions made in another as they hop between the two. Like in any great magical film, they must eventually engage in a titanic struggle between good and evil.
Blame
Blame! might not be the greatest viewing for you if you’re afraid of technology’s escalating power. (Or, if you’re seeking a horrifying horror film, perhaps the ideal one.) The movie is set in a far-off future where robots hunt people who are thought to be trespassers. A group of survivors, however, eventually stumble across Killy, a synthetic human who may hold the key to their survival.
