Bhagyashree reflects on changing face of Hindi cinema; questions need for excessive intimacy on screen

Actor Bhagyashree, who became an overnight sensation with Maine Pyaar Kiya, has opened up about how Hindi cinema has transformed over the decades. In a recent conversation with Variety India, she reflected on the shift from the 90s family-centric film culture to today’s fragmented and genre-driven landscape.

Recalling the era of her debut alongside Salman Khan, Bhagyashree said cinema in the 90s was a shared family experience and often the primary form of entertainment. With changing social structures and the rise of multiple creative platforms, she believes audience preferences have diversified, making it harder for one film to appeal to everyone.

However, she expressed concern over what she described as an unnecessary emphasis on explicit intimacy in contemporary films. While acknowledging that realism and bold storytelling are now market-driven, she maintained that narratives can remain impactful without making viewers uncomfortable in a family setting.

Bhagyashree also addressed how female actors in the 90s often found limited opportunities after marriage due to patriarchal narratives. She noted that perceptions have gradually shifted, with more women pursuing careers post-marriage and receiving support from their families.

After stepping away from films following projects like Paayal and Omkaram, Bhagyashree returned with Maa Santoshi Maa and later featured in titles such as Thalaivii, Radhe Shyam and Sajini Shinde Ka Viral Video, where her negative role earned praise.
