Bharat Biotech to release Covaxin efficacy data in 2 weeks
Bharat Biotech’s Chairman and Managing Director Dr Krishna Ella announced that the efficacy data of Covaxin will be released in the next two weeks.
He spoke at the BioAsia summit and said, “Had we done the (phase) 2/3 combined, we would have captured efficacy faster. But, anyhow, we should be coming out with efficacy (data) in two weeks.” Covaxin was approved on January 3 by the Drug Controller General (DGCA) of India because the government believed that the vaccine will be effective against mutants of the virus despite it not having completed phase 3 trials. Earlier Bharat Biotech published data on the effectivity of Covaxin against the UK strain of COVID-19. The data was not peer-reviewed.
Dr Ella believes Covaxin can be modified to combat the South African strain as well within 15 days of the company getting a sample of the strain. The company is also making a third facility by next week that will increase the production of vaccine doses.
