Bid for ‘fancy’ vehicle number reaches ₹1.17 crore in Haryana

In Haryana, the allure of unique or “fancy” car registration numbers reached a new peak this week when the offer for HR-88-B-8888 reached ₹1.17 crore. HT has learned that the bidder, named only by his name Sudhir Kumar, paid the ₹10,000 required to participate in the process and has until next week to pay the bid sum.

The number won’t be deemed sold until after that. Although it could not be fully confirmed, several publications claimed that this was the biggest bid ever for a fancy number in India.

According to procedure, Haryana conducts weekly online auctions for fancy numbers, with bidding ending on Wednesday at 5 p.m. on the fancy.parivahan.gov.in webpage. With 45 applications, the number HR-88-B-8888 had the most this week. The starting price was fixed at ₹50,000. HR-88 indicates that the number is from the Kundli Regional Transport Office (RTO) in the Sonipat district of Haryana.

Over time, the fascination with exotic numerals has spread throughout all of India. A Keralan businessman purchased the number KL-07-DG-0007 for his Lamborghini, a vehicle valued at around ₹4 crore, in April 2025 for ₹45.99 lakh. In many cultures, the number “0007” is considered lucky and has a relation to James Bond.

For a variety of reasons, including numerology, birthdays, and a general craze for extreme uniqueness, numbers fetch enormous values. The UT’s Registering and Licensing Authority (RLA) held an e-auction in Chandigarh in August of this year, and the number “0001” of the CH01-DA series received a bid of ₹36.43 lakh against the reserve price of ₹50,000.
