Bihar floods affect over 16 lakh people; rescue operations in full swing

According to officials on Monday, floods in Bihar, where many rivers are overflowing as a result of the intense rains over the previous 24 hours, have impacted over 16 lakh people. According to them, 32 NDRF and SDRF teams have participated in rescue efforts.

“Rivers and streams overflowed in a number of districts, including Bhojpur, Patna, Bhagalpur, Vaishali, Lakhisarai, Saran, Munger, Khagaria, and Begusarai, due to continual rain… Additionally, rivers in Nepal’s catchment areas are spilling beyond the danger level in a number of locations due to excessive rains,” an official stated.

The state’s Ganga, Kosi, Bagmati, Burhi Gandak, Punpun, and Ghaghara rivers now have higher water levels as a result of recent rains. At some locations in Bhojpur, Patna, Bhagalpur, Vaishali, Lakhisarai, Saran, Munger, Khagaria, and Begusarai, these are flowing over the danger level, according to a statement from the Disaster Management Department. Currently, the state’s floods are affecting around 16 lakh people.

According to the statement, no fatalities have been reported from any area of Bihar thus far. “All concerned wings of the Water Resources Department have been instructed to stay on alert mode due to the ongoing rise in the water levels of several rivers in Bihar and the heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the Gandak and Kosi rivers, which are located in Nepal,” Principal Secretary, WRD, Santosh Kumar Mall, told PTI.

According to him, regions in question have also been instructed to be ready to set up more assistance camps and community kitchens in the event that the situation worsens. According to the statement, the floods affected a total of 3,83,340 people in 18 panchayats in the Saran district, 3,15,596 people in 36 Begusarai panchayats, 2,37,765 people in 67 Bhagalpur panchayats, 1,88,000 people in 30 Bhojpur panchayats, 1,85,786 people in 24 Patna panchayats, 1,67,200 people in 23 Vaishali panchayats, and 1,26,000 people in 28 Munger panchayats.
