BJP names Mohan Yadav as new Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh

Three-time MLA Mohan Yadav was named the next chief minister of Madhya Pradesh on Monday, replacing four-time CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan, only days after the BJP came to power in the state, taking power from the Congress in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. This is the second announcement in the three states. Yadav, an MLA from Ujjain, was in the previous state cabinet led by outgoing chief minister Shivraj Singh.

Yadav was elected in a BJP legislature party meeting in Bhopal ten days after the election results were announced. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, his predecessor, earlier stated that he was not in the race for the chief minister’s post. The BJP campaigned without a chief ministerial candidate in the 2023 assembly elections, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the campaign.

Outgoing finance minister and two-time Mandsaur MLA Jagdish Devda and outgoing public relation minister and Rewa MLA Rajendra Shukla have been named deputy chief ministers. Narendra Singh Tomar, a former Union Agriculture Minister, has been chosen Speaker of the MP Assembly.

In the election that took place on November 17, the BJP secured 163 seats in the 230-member assembly, while the Congress managed to get just 66 seats. The results were announced on December 3.
