Bombay high court orders action against illegal pigeon feeding

The Bombay High Court has ordered the municipal corporation to take strong action against the violators and file complaints against them, expressing worry about the illicit feeding of pigeons despite a ban, citing the health risks involved. The observations were made by a bench of justices Girish S. Kulkarni and Arif S.

Doctor on Wednesday during the hearing of petitions contesting the July 3 demolition of kabutarkhanas (feeding points) by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The court noted that the unlawful pigeon feeding persisted in spite of explicit instructions from the municipal corporation and halted the demolition.

Due to pigeon droppings and serious respiratory illnesses brought on by pigeon exposure, the BMC has decided to close “Kabutarkhanas.” On July 24, the BMC informed the court that the feathers and droppings of the pigeons caused asthma and other illnesses like pneumonitis and hypersensitivity. Exposure to pigeons and their droppings can induce acute dyspnea and damage to the lungs, according to a medical report presented to the court.

According to the report, most people become aware of this illness too late by the time lung fibrosis begins. There is currently no medication that can reverse or cure fibrosis.
