Borussia Dortmund punished Manchester United’s defensive errors on Sunday, as the English Premier League giants lost 3-2 to the Bundesliga club in Las Vegas to end their North American tour.
Dortmund substitute Youssoufa Moukoko’s second-half goal proved the difference in a fascinating match at Allegiant Stadium, home of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders.
United boss Erik ten Hag started with a virtual reserve team, with Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and new signing Mason Mount on the bench.
However, United’s makeshift starting XI was more than a match for Dortmund in the first half, dominating for longer periods before Diogo Dalot gave the Red Devils the lead with a long-range shot on 24 minutes.
Dortmund, however, flipped the match on its head in the last minutes of the first half, scoring two goals in a minute from Dutch international attacker Donyell Malen.
United were fortunate not to be 3-1 down in the opening minutes of the second half, when another defensive blunder, this time by Harry Maguire, allowed Sebastien Haller a shot on goal.
United drew level in the 52nd minute when Brazilian striker Antony swept home a low shot from inside the box after Dortmund veteran Mats Hummels a botched clearance.
With 30 minutes remaining, Ten Hag made a substitution, with Rashford immediately providing more of an attacking threat.
However, it was Dortmund who netted the game-winner, with veteran Marco Reus creating a wonderful opportunity to set up Moukoko for the winner.
