In the midst of widespread demonstrations, the recent rape and killing murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital has come under scrutiny by the Supreme Court.
On August 9, while working at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, the postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly sexually assaulted and killed. All the doctor’s demands for strict punishment of the perpetrators and increased safety precautions for themselves have resulted in national strikes and protests in response to this incident.
In a letter sent earlier on Thursday, two Supreme Court lawyers urged Chief Justice DY Chandrachud to take suo motu notice of the doctor’s rape and murder in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College.
The letter quotes, “The nation looks to the judiciary as the ultimate guardian of justice, the last refuge for those whose cries have been silenced by brutality. The victim in this case, a young doctor whose life was dedicated to serving others, deserves nothing less than the full measure of justice that our legal system can provide. Her death must not be in vain; it must galvanise us to act, to ensure that no other woman suffers such a fate.”
The case will be reviewed by the Supreme court led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. Furthermore, the former hospital principal showed up at the CBI office at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake around 11 a.m. on Sunday after spending more than 13 hours being questioned by agency officers from Saturday until after midnight.
