Budget 2021: Govt to spend ₹3 trillion to ensure tap water in every household

The government of India is planning to spend ₹3 trillion to ensure that every household in the country has access to tap water, in the next five years.

The plan is still under discussion and will soon be confirmed on February 1 as a part of the Union budget for the year April 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022. The government is planning to improve water availability, modernize sewage treatment plants, and better utilize the country’s water resources.

This initiative will be part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Jal Jeevan mission.

In India, more than 50% of the population does not have access to safe drinking water. Approximately 200,000 people die due to lack of water every year. The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) described India’s water crisis as “the worst water crisis” in India’s history.
