Can the Eagles $56 million Pro Bowler dump Philadelphia to join Patriots?

The Philadelphia Eagles’ defense, which made a huge impact in the Super Bowl, might face a significant loss this offseason with Josh Sweat heading to free agency. Sweat, a key player for the Eagles since 2018, has proven his worth on the field and is now looking for a big payday.

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox pointed out that the New England Patriots could be a strong contender to sign Sweat. With the Patriots having the most projected cap space in the league, they could make a move to bolster their defense, especially after finishing the 2024 season with the lowest sack total in the NFL (just 28). Knox suggested that Sweat, with his proven sack ability, could be exactly what the Patriots need to improve their pass rush.

Sweat has racked up 43 career sacks and earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2021. Last season, he posted eight sacks in 15 games, showcasing his consistent pass-rushing ability. At 28 years old, he’s still in his prime and has several good years left in him. Though he’s not considered an elite sack specialist, Sweat has the potential to be a team’s main pass-rusher or a valuable complement to other defensive stars. Pro Football Focus ranked him 28th out of 211 edge-rushers in 2024, further solidifying his reputation as a solid contributor.

Projected to earn a three-year, $56 million deal, Sweat could prove to be a key addition for the Patriots as they aim to return to playoff contention under head coach Mike Vrabel. Meanwhile, the Eagles might be forced to let him go to focus on strengthening other areas of their roster, creating an opportunity for the Patriots to snatch up a key player in free agency.
