Lakshya Sen won the men’s singles championship at the Canada Open 2023 after beating defending All England champion Li Shi Feng. Lakshya defeated the world no. 10 in straight games, winning 21-18, 22-20.
Lakshya has now won two BWF World Tour titles after taking home the India Open in January 2022.
In the Round of 32, Lakshya, who is presently rated 19th, defeated world No. 4 Kunlavut Vitidsarn. He then won easily against world number 11 Kento Nishimoto of Japan in the quarterfinal to advance to his second Super 500 final and first BWF summit match in over a year. Lakshya won the match 21-17 21-14.
Lakshya underwent nose surgery for a deviated septum following the World Championships last August and required a long time to recuperate. His most recent final appearance came in August of last year at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
After a number of early tournament exits, he showed signs of improvement by reaching the quarterfinals of the Thailand Open.
Meanwhile, double Olympic medalist PV Sindhu lost in the women’s singles semifinals after losing 14-21 15-21 to world No. 1 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan.
