Canada praised the Indian government for having talks with the farmers in India who are protesting, after criticising the government earlier, according to a Times of India report.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Anurag Srivastava told The Times of India reporters, “You should have seen the readouts from both sides on the farmers’ protest. PM Trudeau commended efforts of India to choose the path of dialogue as befitting in the democracy. He also acknowledges the responsibility of his government in providing protection to Indian personnel and premises in Canada.” He was referring to the phone call made by Justin Trudeau to PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday. Canada had expressed concerns before regarding the farmers’ agitation.
Canada also ensured the security of Indian diplomats in the call. This includes the Sikh population in Canada. Canada has a small but influential Sikh population. Sikhs have been at the forefront of the farmers’ agitation in India.
