Directors’ Fortnight, the parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival has revealed its screenings list for the 2021 edition of the festival. The section runs from 7 July to 17 July and includes a number of critically acclaimed movies and debuts that moviegoers look forward to watching during the fortnight.
Paolo Moretti, who has been heading the Directors’ Fortnight section since the 2019 edition of the Cannes Festival, presented the roaster from the Forum des Images in Paris. The chief also said how the jury is happy to present their selection of discovery after a painful year that was troubled with the Covid – 19 pandemic. For the first time in Cannes, a total of 22 filmmakers are debuting out of 24 feature films at Cannes. It is also special to note that half of this year’s movies are either directed or co-directed by women, including names like Clio Barnard, Alice Rohrwacher, Pietro Marcello, and Francesco Munzi, and Joanna Hogg.
The lineup includes a total of eight debut feature films. A piece of big news for India is the selection of the feature film ‘A Night of Knowing Nothing’ directed by Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia. Some of the other mentionable ones in the lineup include The Souvenir Part II by filmmaker Joanna Hogg, Ali & Ava by director Clio Barnard, Futura by director Pietro Marcello, Alice Rohrwacher and Francesco Munzi, and Europa by filmmaker Haider Rashid.
The prestigious Carrosse d’Or honor will be received by veteran documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman on the opening day of the Fortnight. Wiseman’s 2018 movie Monrovia, Indiana will be screened as part of the festival and the veteran filmmaker will also hold a masterclass.
