The Centre on Saturday told the Apex Court that it is against the practice of forcing couples into having a certain number of children to follow population reduction. In an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court the health ministry specified that the family planning programme is voluntary in nature and it lets the couple decide the size of the family according to their choice without any compulsion. The submission was made in response to a PIL filed by BJP leader and lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay.
