Anthony Mackie recently opened up about his decision to ditch the iconic Falcon mask in Captain America: Brave New World, revealing that the experience of wearing it was a nightmare. In an interview with IGN, Mackie confessed that he made it clear to the filmmakers and director that he would never wear the white mask and red glasses again, describing it as “impossible” to work with due to the intense heat, sweat, and fogged-up glasses.
The mask, which was gifted to Sam Wilson by Wakanda in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series, has been a part of his superhero ensemble, but Mackie made it clear that he couldn’t endure the discomfort it brought. “That was hard,” he said, adding that it felt more like a cowl than something practical for fighting crime.
In Captain America: Brave New World, Wilson will sport a new red, white, and blue suit that aligns more with his role as the new Captain America. Mackie, who took up Steve Rogers’ shield at the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, is excited about the new chapter for his character, noting that the response to him becoming Captain America has been overwhelmingly positive. Mackie has expressed that he’s not feeling the pressure of stepping into this iconic role, but rather, he’s excited to see where Marvel takes Sam Wilson next.
Captain America: Brave New World is set to hit theaters on February 14, 2024, and fans are eager to see how Sam Wilson embraces his new role as Captain America in the next phase of the MCU.
