Carrie Underwood delivered a breathtaking a cappella performance of America the Beautiful at Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday after unexpected technical difficulties disrupted the planned music.
The country music superstar was the first performer of the event, taking the stage right after Trump’s swearing-in ceremony and speech. However, just as she was about to begin, a major technical glitch left the crowd in suspense for nearly two minutes.
With no immediate fix in sight, an usher quietly informed Underwood about the issue. Instead of waiting any longer, she took matters into her own hands, inviting the audience to join her as she started singing America the Beautiful without any instrumental backing.
“You know the words, help me out here,” she encouraged the crowd before launching into the patriotic tune, proving once again why she’s one of the most revered vocalists in country music.
Underwood had previously shared her excitement about being part of such a historic occasion. Speaking to People, she said, “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event.” She also highlighted the importance of unity, stating, “At a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and look to the future, I am humbled to answer the call.”
The event, originally planned to take place outdoors, had been moved inside to the Capitol Rotunda due to freezing temperatures in the low 20s.
Underwood was just one of many artists performing at Trump’s inaugural events, joining a lineup that included Kid Rock, the Village People, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Liberty University’s Praise Choir, among others.
