Centre writes to WhatsApp to withdraw privacy policy

Government of India, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) has written to Global CEO of WhatsApp, Will Cathcart, to withdraw proposed changes in its new privacy policy. The letter expresses strong concerns and WhatsApp has been asked to “respect the informational privacy and data security of Indian users”.

The government accentuated that the policy will lead to collection of “a vast amount of highly invasive and granular metadata”. According to the government, the policy exposes Indian citizens to “greater security risks and vulnerabilities creating a honeypot of information.” India raised strong objections as the policy was changed for India and remains unchanged to its users in the European union.

The policy was announced earlier this month, it asked users to accept new terms by February 8 or they could lose access to their accounts by means of termination. The termination process was put to halt after huge controversies.
