Chelsea have completed the signing of Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig for a reported fee of £52 million. The Premier League affirmed Nkunku’s arrival on their website. Nkunku finished last season as the Bundesliga’s joint-top scorer with 23 goals.
“I am incredibly happy to be joining Chelsea,” said Nkunku according to the Blues’ website.
“A big effort was made to bring me to the club and I am looking forward to meeting my new coach and teammates and showing the Chelsea supporters what I can do on the pitch,” the Frenchman added.
Nkunku has ten caps for France and has signed a six-year contract.
The Blues activated the Frenchman’s £52 million release clause. Nkunku rose through the ranks of Paris Saint-Germain’s academy and spent 4 years in the first team, although on an irregular basis, before joining Leipzig in 2019.
With his blistering pace and superb finishing, the 25-year-old has established himself as one of the game’s most deadly wide-forwards.
Nkunku is Chelsea’s 2nd signing this summer, following the signing of midfielder Kendry Paez for €20 million (£17.27 million), however, the 16-year-old will not join the club until 2025.
The Blues are trying to reduce the players on their first-team squad after record spending the past two windows under new owner Todd Boehly.
