The district collectors of Telangana State are in for a time of their lives. The Chief Minister of the state, K Chandrasekhar Rao has bought Kia Carnival cars for 32 district collectors which each cost around the figures of ₹25-30 lakh each. This purchase was made during a time when Telangana is under a lot of debt, estimated to be ₹40,000 crores in addition to the ongoing battle with the COVID-19 pandemic.
To justify the purchase of luxury cars, the Chief Minister said the collectors would be in need of such vehicles to tour the entire district and discharge their duties.
After the inspection of cars by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, the cars were flagged off on Sunday by the transport minister of Telangana, Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar in the attendance of the state Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar and other officials at the Chief Minister’s residence in Hyderabad, Pragati Bhavan.
The BJP has claimed this buy as a ‘criminal spurge; by the Cheif Minister of Telangana and has said that it was done to ‘appease bureaucrats’. BJP spokesperson Krishna Saagar Rao was baffled by how the chief minister can justify the spending of ₹11 crores on luxury cars. This decision was quoted to be “horrendous and unthinkable.”
