China and Russia takeoff from UNHRC resolution on Myanmar

On February 12 both Russia and China have decided to pull out of UNHRC resolution regarding the recent coup in Myanmar on Feb 01 by the countries own military forces. Both the countries and their envoys have decided to “disassociate” themselves from the resolution.

United Nation Human Rights Council resolution was approved in special session in Geneva by consensus. The aim of the resolution was to call upon the release of detained political leaders which include President Win Myint and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.

The resolution also stressed upon the need to refrain from violence and respect human rights, the rule of the law and fundamental right of freedom. UN Special Rapporteur Thomas Andrews has condemned the detention of political personalities and US has slapped sanctions on 10 current and former military officers who led the coup.

New Zealand has also stopped the financial aid which it provided to Myanmar so that it does not fund any of the activities led by military officials and has demanded the release of political prisoners and restoration of democracy in the country.
