Colombia beats Germany 2-0 as Juan Cuadrado shines in historic friendly win

Germany was defeated 2-0 at home by Colombia in a friendly on Tuesday, their latest setback less than a year before hosting Euro 2024.

Both Juan Cuadrado’s penalty in the 82nd minute and Luis Diaz’s header in the 54th minute gave their team their first win against the Germans, who were booed at the end of the match.

Prior to Friday’s 1-0 defeat to Poland, Germany required two late goals to draw against Ukraine 3-3 last week, despite having less than a year to build a battle-hardened squad for the continental tournament.

Since their shocking World Cup group stage defeat in December, the four-time world champions have only won one of their last 5 games. They have also only won three of their previous 11 games.

“Obviously I am very disappointed that we could not apply what we had set out to do,” said Germany coach Hansi Flick. He added, “There are things that we wanted to try but they backfired.”

Flick, who took over in 2021 and has been under pressure since the World Cup’s early exit, said his team lacked confidence.

“What can I say? The arguments are not on our side at the moment. We have to analyse it, draw our lessons,” he said after 3 games without a win.
