Commonwealth 2022: India and Pakistan among cricket teams to qualify for Birmingham games 2020

The International Cricket Council and the Commonwealth Games Federation announced on Monday about India, Pakistan, Australia,  New Zealand, South Africa, England and a team from West Indies will participate in the Birmingham games 2020.

All the teams were selected on the basis of their ICC T20 rankings released on 1st April 2021. The ICC women’s team will be making their first appearance in the Commonwealth Games. However, Men’s cricket teams participated in the year 1998 in Kuala Lampur.

Cricket turns out to be the first sport to declare the qualifying teams for the upcoming Birmingham Games 2022. The event will be organized next year starting from 28 July till 8 August in Birmingham, England. The well known, Edgbaston Stadium will host the Commonwealth Games cricket event with the tickets available for purchase from this year,

The final team playing in the games will be decided by a qualifier to take place on January 31, 2022. Indian Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur showcased the entire team’s concern on how happy they are to be a part of the Commonwealth Games. She also stated that the team is confident and will enter strong after their last year’s experience in ICC Women’s T20 World final in Australia last year.

“It’s great to be confirmed a place in the Commonwealth Games. We are raring to go, confident of doing well after having made the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia last year. It is an awesome opportunity for both the women’s game and cricket to make a mark at the prestigious multi-discipline Games and we hope to return with loads of good memories.” Harmanpreet Kaur said.

CGF President Louise Martin displayed her joy in cricket’s return to the Commonwealth Games since after 1998’s participation in Men’s cricket in Kuala Lampur.

“The debut of women’s T20 cricket will be a historic moment for Commonwealth Sport and a wonderful showcase for women’s sport across the world,” Louise concluded.
