Conversion backlash: Ismail Darbar says son ‘stands in pooja, wears tilak’

Composer Ismail Darbar has already discussed his interfaith family. Ayesha, the composer’s second wife, was a Hindu before marrying him and eventually converted to Islam. In a recent podcast appearance, Ismail discussed Ayesha’s life after marriage and answered criticisms of her conversion. Ismail Darbar was married to Farzana, with whom he has two sons: Awez and Zaid.

While married to Farzana, the composer married his second wife, Ayesha, two decades ago. “The past 20 years of my life have been really difficult. But I commend Ayesha for bearing it with me. In fact, Sanjay Leela Bhansali was so close to my family that he informed me that I was rescued solely because of my wife, and that if it hadn’t been for her, I would have died,” the composer stated in an interview with Subhojit Ghosh for his YouTube channel.

Ismail responded to those who were mocking him and his wife for her conversion to Islam following their marriage, revealing that their son also has a Hindu name. “After a year of marriage, my son was born, and Bhansali named him Imaan. His Hindu name is Maan. When he visits his maternal grandparents, he is referred to as Maan. He also stands in the puja and applies a tilak to his forehead. “I have taught him to respect the religion in which he was born, as well as all other religions,” the composer stated.

Ismail Darbar had discussed marrying Ayesha while still married to Farzana. He also stated that he had not forced her to change her religion. Speaking with Vickey Lalwani, the composer revealed that his marriage to Farzana was strained at the time. He went on to say, “Our disputes were at their peak. I had moved out and lived in a different residence for two months before marrying Ayesha in Surat without informing her.”Ismail Darbar began his career as a composer in 1999 with Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, for which he received a National Award. NiThroughout his career, he has composed music for approximately two dozen films, including Devdas (also directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali), Kisna, Shakti The Power, and Kanchi.
