Rajinikanth’s Coolie held its own at the ticket booth even as the excitement of the Independence Day holiday and opening day subsided. Despite a little decrease at the box office on Saturday, the third day of its release, Coolie nevertheless had a successful day both locally and internationally. The movie is now the first Tamil film to reach the ₹300 crore mark globally this year.
Coolie’s two-day haul of ₹119.75 crore was boosted by ₹38.50 crore net on Saturday. With this, its three-day domestic total now stands at ₹158.25 crore net (₹187 crore gross). In its first two days of release, the movie made over $12 million abroad, and by the end of the third day, it had surpassed $15 million. Coolie’s global gross is currently at ₹320 crore and is growing as the final figures are still being tallied.
It surpasses Vijay’s Leo, which reached the milestone in four days last year, to become the fastest Tamil film to reach ₹300 crore globally. On the third day, Coolie also exceeded the lifetime box office receipts of some of the most recent Bollywood films, such as Housefull 5 (₹288 crore) and Sitaare Zameen Par (₹263 crore). Furthermore, it hasn’t even finished its first weekend yet.
Coolie has held its own and maintained a solid pace at the box office in spite of mediocre reviews and divisive word-of-mouth. Based on Coolie’s box office performance, it should aim for a lifetime run of ₹600 crore and could even overtake 2.0 as the number one film. Rajinikanth played the lead in two of the three Tamil films that have ever made over ₹600 crore worldwide: 2.0 and Jailer. Leo by Vijay is the third.
Rajinikanth plays the title role in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s film Coolie, which also stars Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, and Sathyaraj. There is a special appearance by Aamir Khan.
