Copa America to start without a host after Conmebol suspends tournament in Argentina

Due to the increase in the COVID-19 pandemic the South American soccer body, Conmebol ruled out Copa America in Argentina two weeks before its kickoff. The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) said on Sunday that Argentina can’t host the Copa America with throwing the troubled tournament into doubt just 13 days prior due to kick-off.

The tournament was going to start between 10 South American nations in Argentina and Colombia between June 13 and July 10 but the co-host removed Colombia on May 20 and Argentina has now as according to what CONMEBOL said that the present circumstances are crucial to be kept in mind. It said in the short statement that CONMEBOL was analysing offers from other countries that have shown interest in hosting the tournament. Further added that update will be announced soon.

Copa America was initially scheduled for 2020 but with the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed. The difficulties are still mounting as the virus continued to strike the region hard and vaccine rollout is remaining slow. Argentina is currently facing a surge of coronavirus infections, with strict lockdown measures imposed last weekend due to the high seven day average of 35,000 cases and 500 deaths. 77,000 people have died in the country as the virus continues to spread.
