David Tennant definitely got the crowd’s attention and had them laughing out loud at the 2025 BAFTA Awards with a cheeky joke about Donald Trump. The Doctor Who star made his return as the host of the ceremony and wasted no time poking fun at the U.S. President.
To kick things off, Tennant took to the stage and performed I’m Gonna Be, a popular track, with some star-studded company. Celebrities like Colman Domingo, James McAvoy, and Anna Kendrick joined him in the performance, setting a fun and energetic tone for the evening.
The actor’s wit didn’t stop there. He threw in a playful jab at Sebastian Stan’s hairstyle in The Apprentice, where Stan played a role inspired by Donald Trump. Tennant quipped that The Brutalist—a film about groundbreaking architecture—featured the boldest “architecture” of the year. But, of course, the biggest “architectural marvel” was none other than Donald Trump’s famous hair in The Apprentice.
Tennant also humorously referred to Trump’s apparent aversion to watching the show, saying, “Donald Trump says he hasn’t seen The Apprentice because it’s a 15 [rating]. It’s not on Nickelodeon, Donald.” He added with a laugh, “I’ve said his name three times now. It’s like Beetlejuice—I’ve summoned him!” And then, transitioning to another topic, he joked, “And speaking of villains…”
The fun didn’t end there. Tennant cracked up the audience with a hilarious line about the movie Conclave, starring Stanley Tucci. He said, “In Conclave, Stanley Tucci plays Cardinal Bellini, which makes total sense because if anyone knows how to whip up a good Bellini cocktail, it’s him!”
The evening got off to a great start with Tennant’s humor, and it was clear that the night would be filled with lots of laughs. Meanwhile, several films, including The Apprentice, The Brutalist, and Conclave, were in the running for multiple awards, adding even more excitement to the already lively atmosphere.
