Denmark’s striker Martin Braithwaite expresses dissatisfaction over no ‘third option’ following Eriksen’s collapse

UEFA offered Denmark players the choice of resuming their match against Finland on Saturday night or beginning again on Sunday morning.

Danish players were dissatisfied on Monday after they were put in a tough position having to choose between resuming their UEFA Euro 2020 group stage match against Finland that same evening or completing it the following morning following their teammate Christian Eriksen’s collapse during the match.

UEFA offered the players the choice of resuming the match on Saturday night or beginning again on Sunday at 1200 local time (1000 GMT) after witnessing Eriksen collapsing on the pitch and being treated for a cardiac arrest. “We were put in a position which I personally don’t think we should have been put in,” Denmark’s goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel told reporters on Monday.

“It probably required that someone above us had said that it was not the time to make a decision and maybe should wait for the next day,” he added.

UEFA – European football’s governing body wrote on Twitter on Saturday that the match would be restarted following the request made by players of both teams. However, Denmark’s striker Martin Braithwaite revealed that “We had two options. None of the options was good. We took the least bad one. There were a lot of players, that weren’t able to play the match. They were elsewhere (mentally)”

“You could have wished for a third option in this situation,” he added.

Just before halftime, Eriksen collapsed on the pitch and after receiving CPR, was taken to the hospital. After a long suspension, the game resumed at 2030 CET and Finland went on to win the game 1-0. The Danish Football Association revealed on Monday that the 29-year-old Eriksen was admitted to a nearby hospital and remained in a stable condition.
