David Schwimmer is opening up about his role in the new Hulu series Goosebumps, where he plays Anthony Brewer. Known for his comedic roles, especially as Ross in Friends, Schwimmer has been expanding his acting range with this new project, showing his versatility by stepping into more dramatic and spooky territory.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Schwimmer shared how he improvised some of the now-famous “gross” scenes in the series, including one that involved a garden tool. The actor was drawn to the role because of the unique tone the producers have established in the second season of the anthology series. “There’s some scary stuff in there!” Schwimmer remarked, praising the team for creating a series where the audience feels safe while still getting spooked.
He also spoke about the technical aspects of making the scenes creepier rather than just gory. According to Schwimmer, the crew experimented with various props and tools to achieve the right effect, but nothing quite worked until they used a specific approach.
One of the standout moments from the series involves Schwimmer’s character interacting with a “goo” that crawls out of a sewer, leading to a tense scene with the use of a garden tool. Schwimmer explained that the choice to make the goo black instead of red was particularly effective, noting that the color choice triggered a different, more unsettling response in the audience’s minds. “It’s more gross than gory,” he said.
Goosebumps is currently streaming on Hulu and Disney+, offering a mix of thrills and chills for fans of the series.
