Reese Witherspoon has had enough of the internet’s wild speculations. The actress recently shut down rumors of a falling out with Kate Winslet after her interview with People magazine sparked online chatter.
During a conversation with the publication alongside her You’re Cordially Invited co-star Will Ferrell, Witherspoon recalled an awkward awards speech where she embarrassed the recipient, jokingly saying, “We’re not friends anymore.” Naturally, the internet went into detective mode, digging up an old moment from 2007 when Witherspoon presented Winslet with an award at the BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards.
This quickly led to speculation that Winslet was the actress in question, with social media users theorizing that this was the moment that ended their friendship.
However, Witherspoon wasn’t about to let the rumors spiral out of control. On Saturday, February 1, she took to her Instagram Stories to set the record straight.
“I’ve been friends with Kate W. for years, and we laughed about this stupidity,” she wrote. “Please do not believe the internet. We are good friends and have never had any falling out.” She followed it up with another post that read, “This is completely UNTRUE… so silly!”
Clarifying her People interview, Witherspoon explained that she had been asked to present an award to someone she didn’t know very well. Since she had never attended that particular awards show before, she assumed it was meant to be more like a roast.
“I ended up roasting her. I thought it was hilarious, but I had the wrong audience. It was bad,” she admitted, adding that she believed the actress in question “doesn’t talk to me anymore.”
While she didn’t name names, one thing is clear—Kate Winslet is not that actress, and there’s no drama between them.
